In football, formations are used to define the general positioning of all players on the field of play, with the exception of the goalkeeper. The formations are grouped by three or four digits separated by hyphens, with the first and last number being zero. These numbers show the number of players in each row, starting with the players closest to the goalkeeper and progressing outward.

In football, the type of configuration used by a team is determined by a variety of criteria, such as the ability of the players available, the nature of the opposition, and the preferences of the club’s management. According to the match situation, formations are flexible and can be adjusted in the middle of a match if the formation and the positioning of players isn’t working out.

In the same way that football has evolved over time, football formations have changed as well. In the early years of the nineteenth century, defensive football was a completely unknown concept, and teams used to line up with as many as seven or eight forwards on the field.
